Fueled Magazine Interview with Imre Struys

1)let's introduce the band and how did you all come 2gether?

Karri: My previous band had split up and I was looking for band mates that were as motivated to make music as I was. I responded to a local ad and the rest is history.

DUCK: Well, hello there! We're INSATIA! A gothic/femme metal band from the States! Before we start, I just want to thank Fueled-Magazine and Imre for this opportunity to be interviewed, we really appreciate it! Jon and I have been working together for a few years, and after our last band failed we really sought out to do something for good. After I met Brenton at a Nightwish concert, the writing for the demo really picked up speed. We found Karri through online classified ads, and then Conrad came about through Jon.

Jon: At the age of 16 I was looking for a band to join forces with. I stumbled upon DUCK and his previous band over myspace. After our previous band disbanded we eventually formed Insatia.

Conrad: I was asked by Jon to audition for the band that he was in. We are really good friends, and he thought I should give it a try.

2)what bands are your inspiration and how do you describe your music?

Karri: I think all of our answers are going to be all over the place. I listen to metal, alternative, folk, classical, new age, choral...

DUCK: I listen to all sorts of music, from Belgian trance like Ian Van Dahl, to Swedish heavy metal like In Flames, to lots of jazz, blues, classical, etc. I've been told, that our music is a mix between Nightwish and In Flames, and you know what? I'm damn happy with that analogy!

Jon: A lot of classic rock bands inspired me to pick up the guitar originally. as i grew older and my soul grew darker I started listen to more brutal music like in flames, all that remains, lamb of god, soilwork, diecast, etc. I enjoy all genres of music but metal is my home.

Brenton: Symphony X, Fates Warning, Redemption, Dream Theater

3)who's the writer of the music and lyrics or is it more 2 bandeffort?

Karri: I write the melodies and lyrics

DUCK: I write the majority of the tunes, then I jam them out with Brenton. We then work on the arrangement and drums, and then Karri writes the lyrics and the melodies. Sometimes we shift out of that recipe, but for the bulk of the demo and the 12 songs we've written for the first full album, it's about how it goes.

Jon: I just make the sandwiches.

Brenton: Group effort

4)nice coverart of the ep. Who's the artist?

Karri: I found a random picture and it just looked...flowery and unrealistic. When I saw it I thought, "How do I really see our world right now?" From there the outlook it represented  took a 180.

DUCK: Thanks! That's all Karri's work. We were going between several designs that everyone had chipped in, and we really liked what Karri put forward. It really fits with the motif of Left Behind.

5)do you play much liveshows and what other bands and only inside or also outside the usa?

Karri: For right now, we're completing our album. We will be ready for live shows after finishing up, in about 3 months or so. We're eager for shows, but we're concentrating on perfecting the product that will be put out for anyone in the world to hear, not just our city or even state. You will be the first to know when we begin!

DUCK: Right now we're not playing live shows because, Brenton lives in another state, and I will soon be moving back to Canada, so our live shows will be put on hold until we are finished recording our first full album. We're in the studio right now, so we plan to have a summer/autumn release. Once that's released and we have merchandise to sell, we'll be taking over a town near you! Hopefully outside the USA, as the scene is better in Europe, but we'll play here first if we have to.

6)how's the music scene in the usa treating young bands like yours?

Karri: There's always room for local shows, but it's hard starting out when you know that you don't want to remain local like a lot of others do (even if they won't admit it). You really have to go to the extra effort to set yourself apart and say, "We're not staying here forever...We're ready for the next step. Are you ready to take us there?"

DUCK: The music scene here is pitiful, unless you're hip-hop/rap or country. There are people who are into metal, but the support just isn't the same as it is in Europe. We haven't been picked up or noticed by any magazines or radio stations in the US. All of the attention we've received are from radio stations and magazines in Canada and in Europe. Real quick thanks to all those who have been there to help INSATIA get noticed!

Jon: Unless you have a carbon copy sound of the bands you hear on the radio it's hard to be noticed. Word is spreading fast about our band here in the states but it is definitely spreading quicker in other parts of the world.

7)and how do you feel about that?

Karri: It can be quite frustrating, but working for it makes you want it that much more.

DUCK: I already knew ahead of time, that being in a gothic/femme metal band meant extensive touring and promotion overseas in Europe, so I'm not really too upset about it. Plus, I like Europe better, anyway.

Jon: I think with time we will develop a huge fan base and take over the world

Brenton: Have jobs - Audio Engineer

8)can you live of your music or do you all have jobs? And what kind of jobs?

Karri: I have a full time job.

DUCK: Not at the moment, unfortunately, but we're working as hard as we can to make that a reality. At current, I am working full time at a restaurant.

Jon: Eventually the plan is to live off the music but as of now i currently hold two jobs. one at a restaurant and the other for the US census.

Conrad: I'm a full time student.

9)what band(s) would you love 2 play with on a gig?

Karri: Personally? Katatonia (with their most recent music).

DUCK: Delain would be awesome! I'm really excited for their new album! All other gothic/femme metal bands would be just as awesome like, Epica or Nightwish.

Jon: in flames, all that remains, lamb of god, epica, nightwish, delain

Brenton: Within Temptation & Symphony X

10)do you have some final words for the fans& soon to be fans, our readers?

Karri: Embrace the explosion or duck and cover.

DUCK: We love you long time! Thanks for the support, we really do appreciate it, and please tell all of your friends about us! High 5!

Jon: Thanks for everyones support! soon we shall take over the world. be ready!
